Are you chasing accuracy within your chosen shooting discipline?
You may have the equipment, but if you allow inconsistencies and variables into the mix, failure or substandard results are almost a given.
Let’s get into it.
We all have our favourites.
When it comes to shotgun cartridges, most shooters eventually settle on a brand or load they know, trust and feel comfortable using. You know how it performs, you know what to expect from it, and perhaps, most importantly, you have confidence in it.
But here's the question:
Does that confidence actually help you shoot better?
Does confidence = more hits?
Lets get into it.
Can confidence genuinly result in more hits ?
Think about the days when everything seems to come together. You're shooting well, you're comfortable with your gun, and you're using the cartridge you've used countless times before.
Do you approach each shot differently because you trust your ammunition?
Perhaps you don't hesitate. You aren't thinking about whether the cartridge will perform. You're focused on the target, your technique and the shot itself.
Could that extra confidence translate into more hits?
Or are we simply convincing ourselves that our preferred cartridge performs better because we're familiar with it?
Would you shoot the same with a different brand?
Here's the interesting test.
Imagine taking two cartridges that are perfectly suited to your gun and performing similarly on paper. One is your usual brand. The other is a brand you've never used before.
If you weren't told which was which, would you actually notice a difference?
And if you were told beforehand that one was your trusted cartridge, would you feel more confident using it?
It's a fascinating question because shooting isn't purely about equipment. Mindset matters too.
Familiarity breeds confidence
There is something reassuring about using equipment you know.
You've used that cartridge before. You know how it feels. You know the recoil. You know what to expect when you pull the trigger.
That familiarity can remove doubt.
And perhaps removing doubt is one of the biggest advantages of using a cartridge you're comfortable with.
If you're confident in your ammunition, you're less likely to blame the cartridge when you miss — and more likely to concentrate on what you're doing.
But is confidence actually measurable?
That's the big question.
Can confidence genuinely result in more hits, or do we simply feel that we're shooting better when we're using our preferred brand?
Maybe there is no simple answer.
There are certainly differences between cartridges, and finding ammunition that works consistently with your particular gun is important. But there is also a psychological side to shooting that shouldn't be ignored.
Confidence can change the way we approach a shot.
And if confidence helps you commit to the shot rather than second-guessing yourself, could that ultimately put more targets in the bag?
So, what do you think?
Is your favourite shotgun cartridge genuinely the best performer for you?
Or have you built up a level of trust in that brand over time — and that confidence has become part of your shooting?
Perhaps the real question is:
Does confidence = more hits?
I'd love to hear what you think.
Do you shoot better with the cartridge you're used to, or would the results be the same if you didn't know which brand was in the gun?
